- #2I have read that if I have an existing Sky dish, then I can use that with Freesat, but do I need to pay for an installer to come out i.e. if there anything that they do besides putting the dish up or can I just buy the box and get going?
Just buy the box and Bob's your uncle, as long as your dish/wiring is in good condition. - #3I have a sky dish and all I had to do was undo the satellite connection on the sky box and put it into the freesat box and hey presto it worked
- #4I have a sky dish and all I had to do was undo the satellite connection on the sky box and put it into the freesat box and hey presto it worked
Any reason you bought a freesat box, when your Sky box currently picks up MORE channels, even without a subscription?
Or did you go for HD, as this is the only reason i can see for buying one right now. - #5If your using a Sky SD box via scart and your Freesat box via HDMI you might cause a conflict this happened to me on my Sanyo HD TV kept putting the TV into standby mode
the DVR is ok so will put the Sky box through this via the decoder scart. - #6I have read that if I have an existing Sky dish, then I can use that with Freesat, but do I need to pay for an installer to come out i.e. if there anything that they do besides putting the dish up or can I just buy the box and get going?
Is the dish already mounted on your wall and receiving Sky or is it one that someone’s given you to put up? - #7I have read that if I have an existing Sky dish, then I can use that with Freesat, but do I need to pay for an installer to come out i.e. if there anything that they do besides putting the dish up or can I just buy the box and get going?
To help clarify (or confuse more).
1) It's not a Sky dish you have. It's a satellite dish that was supplied by Sky to receive their services. In the same way, the aerial on your roof (if you still have one) is not a BBC aerial, or any other aerial, it is one that points at the mast transmitting the signal of all the channels.
2) Satellite dishes that receive the old Analogue service (generally large and round) won't do. If the dish was/is used to receive the Sky digital service then it's perfect.
3) Sky and Freesat use the same satellite to beam the signal.
4) 3 is not strictly true as some channels (eg. the BBC ones, ITV and others) are actually the same feed. The Sky feeds are the encrypted ones that need a Sky viewing card to view. So BBC1 on a Sky receiver is the same signal as BBC1 on a Freesat receiver (or any other piece of equipment including PC cards that can receive a digital signal from the dish).
5) You don't say if you already have a Sky receiver or not. If you have, you can just unscrew the satellite feed from the Sky box and connect it to the Freesat one (making sure both are turned off at the mains, as the satellite lead does carry a small electrical current - not dangerous to you but can cause the equipment a problem if short circuited). If you just have an already installed dish left over from someone else, as long as there is a lead to where you want the Freesat box you can connect it yourself, and all should be OK
6) You should only consider the installation IF a dish needs to be put up and cables run. If all that is already in place it is no more difficult installing a Freesat box than a TV or Freeview box. - #8To help clarify (or confuse more).

Sky and (non Sky) Freesat do not use the same satellite for their services - they use use different but closely co-sited satellites. The EPG (only) for the Freesat services does come from same satellite that SKY is transmitted on. - #9Sky and (non Sky) Freesat do not use the same satellite for their services - they use use different but closely co-sited satellites. The EPG (only) for the Freesat services does come from same satellite that SKY is transmitted on.
BBC1, for example, uses the same frequency on Sky and freesat - it's the same channel. CH4 uses different frequencies though. Sky's version is encrypted and freesat's version is FTA (and a lower bit rate). - #10Sky and (non Sky) Freesat do not use the same satellite for their services - they use use different but closely co-sited satellites. Wrong, wrong and wrong!!!! - #11Wrong, wrong and wrong!!!!
So you're telling me that the BBC HD & ITV HD and SKY's HD services are transmitted from the same satellite? - #12So you're telling me that the BBC HD & ITV HD and SKY's HD services are transmitted from the same satellite?
You are now changing the question.
Sky's BBC HD and freesat's BBC HD are exactly the same channel (same transponder - exactly the same bits).
Also, you were wrong about the EPGs. Sky's EPG is broadcast on Astra and freesat's EPG is broadcast on Eurobird. - #13You are now changing the question.

My clear understanding is that the BBC HD and ITV HD services do NOT transmit from the same satellite as Sky's HD services. Did not the BBC move its service away from Sky due to Sky's inflated service fees?
I accept the point you make about the epg services. - #14My clear understanding is that the BBC HD and ITV HD services do NOT transmit from the same satellite as Sky's HD services. Did not the BBC move its service away from Sky due to Sky's inflated service fees?
No. The service fees are only to do with the EPG slots. Some channels pay SKY to uplink their service to the satellite but I doubt the BBC do this.
All current channels on freesat use exactly the same channels (transponders / frequencies) as Sky. The only exception is C4. C4 on Sky is scrambled via Videoguard and is available as a FTV channel with a Sky card (I think it's on Astra 2C - could be wrong though). The freesat version of C4 is broadcast on Astra 2D in the clear so is FTA. It is being transmitted at a lower bitrate and does not have the regional variations for adverts. So, on freesat C4 you will see different adverts to Sky's C4. - #15So you're telling me that the BBC HD & ITV HD and SKY's HD services are transmitted from the same satellite?
Perhaps he means the same satellite position - ignoring the 0.3 degree difference of course. - #16No. The service fees are only to do with the EPG slots. Some channels pay SKY to uplink their service to the satellite but I doubt the BBC do this.

That's interesting, and correct I'm sure, but I don't think you were able to answer my question - does the BBC HD and ITV HD service come from the same satellite as Sky's HD services - the answer, I believe is 'no' - they come from co-sited satellites. - #17That's interesting, and correct I'm sure, but I don't think you were able to answer my question - does the BBC HD and ITV HD service come from the same satellite as Sky's HD services - the answer, I believe is 'no' - they come from co-sited satellites.
You've changed you focus from post #8 where you were taling about all services. Now you are only talking about BBC HD and ITV HD vs Sky's HD channels.
There is a mixture. Sky uses channels on different Astra satellites as they can protect their services with encryption. freesat channels will need to be on Astra 2D (as per many Sky channels). The reason for this is that freesat channels must be broadcast in the clear (FTA) and they must be on 2D as it is tightly focussed on the UK. Some encrypted Sky channels are still being broadcast on Astra 2D even though there is no need for them to be there.
This answers your post #8. - #18Is the dish already mounted on your wall and receiving Sky or is it one that someone’s given you to put up?
It is already up. I stopped using sky about 2 years ago. - #19To help clarify (or confuse more).

They are exactly the same channels, there are essentially no 'Sky channels' or 'Freesat channels', there are just channels broadcast from 28.2E/28.5E. Freesat is just an EPG, no channels, you receive the same channels as a Sky box, or an FTA box.
There are presently two exceptions, there's a separate CH4 that a Freesat box picks up (while waiting for CH4's encryption contract to expire), and ITV isn't yet a 'channel', just an odd programme on an interactive data stream. - #21Brill! Then you're 'good to go'. Plug in, connect up, switch on, answer some simple questions - and sit back and enjoy.
Whoops, I mean of course, Connect up, switch on, ... - #22They are exactly the same channels, there are essentially no 'Sky channels' or 'Freesat channels', there are just channels broadcast from 28.2E/28.5E. I think what the OP is trying to get at, is that ITV HD and BBC HD are on different satellites than SKY ONE HD, SPORTS HD, ETC. Not the actual services, but the channels themselves, not that BBCHD are on different satellites depending on how you watch them. - #23I think what the OP is trying to get at, is that ITV HD and BBC HD are on different satellites than SKY ONE HD, SPORTS HD, ETC. Yes, I was talking specifically about ITV HD and BBC HD programs - to be honest I can see now that I didn't make that clear at all.
As Ive already posted, I readily accept the previous postings on where the epg's come from. - #24BBC HD is broadcast from Astra 2D, ITV HD is broadcast from Eurobird 1.
The BBC HD stream is the same on Sky HD boxes and freesat boxes, but ITV HD is only on freesat. - #25Hi guys – a very raw recruit here. I left sky a very long time ago but the dish is still fitted. and working. I was just about to buy a Humax and plug it in to the dish when I read this in an earlier reply.
Satellite dishes that receive the old Analogue service (generally large and round) won't do
I though a sat dish was just a sat dish. Any idiot proof way I can tell if my existing dish is suitable to receive freesat? Thanks. - #26Hi guys – a very raw recruit here. What size / shape is it?
Is it one of the old solid type or the new oval mesh type?
